Burdens and Rest

Updated: Aug 5, 2022

I woke up in the middle of the night, not feeling sleepy. I was lying there and remembering how someone once said that God sometimes "wakes them up" before dawn to talk to them. So in my thoughts, I called God's name and in my Spirit, I saw Jesus sitting silently at the edge of my bed. At first, I was a little confused but then I saw that I'm holding a pile of my own fears and anxieties in my arms.

Then Jesus asked me: "Why are you holding on to them? Why wouldn't you give them to me?" I realized that He was right so I started handing Him my worries naming them: my hurting tooth, my upcoming job, my family's future, etc. He took them all and then asked me again: "why were you holding on to them?"

I heard the answer in my heart: because I think I can handle it. That I'll call the doctor about my tooth tomorrow, that I'll do well at my new job if I set my mind right, that I'll worry about my future later when it comes. But can I actually handle it all by myself?

Then I remembered a Bible verse and God Himself started explaining it to me:

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matt 11:28-29)

If you're carrying burdens on your heart, if you labor hard, if you can't manage, if you need rest - you need to come to Jesus. Don't put your hope in yourself or your resources, just honestly share it with Him.

He will take your worries and anxieties and will give you His yoke instead. This topic is very interesting by itself, you can think about what His yoke means and how some other "captivity" can actually make you free. But the general idea is that instead of your burden Jesus gives us His and wants to teach us how to be lowly and humble.

You need humility to ask for help. To not take all the responsibility but accept your insolvency, your imperfection, and run to the Father. Even Jesus Himself would share His feelings and worries with God, giving us an example of a healthy relationship.

Why do you need it? Jesus promises to give you rest, give you peace. That you will sleep peacefully knowing that He will take care of your tomorrow. That you will joyfully look in the future knowing that no trials can break your spirit if it's in the almighty Lord's hands. That your soul will delight in every day instead of being eaten by fear and anxiety. Come to Jesus and give Him your burden. Learn humility from Him and find rest for your soul.
