Advice for Your Younger Self

Have you even noticed that we start realizing some basic things only when we get older and more experienced? My friends from Instagram helped me gather a lot of simple but wise advice so I'm happy to share them with you so that at any age we wouldn't miss anything!

Here are the top 5 recommendations that were mentioned by many people:

#1 Don't be afraid to leave your comfort zone (you'll be proud of yourself)

Eventually, you understand how much you can miss because of your fears or shyness. When you're young a lot of doors are open in front of you so you shouldn't be afraid and just walk in! I don't mean bust it off or break your boundaries but rather inspect and explore. When you get older some doors may be closed but no one will take your experience - it's also the thing that forms our personality and worldview. Someone also mentioned that "it's never too late to start learning something!"

#2 Take it easy

Did you know that nerve cells can't be restored? With time you start realizing that everything is not as important as it seems: school and work are not worthy of losing your health, relationships change and require work (rather than resentment), criticism is good if you learn how to use it. It's easier to live if you can let it go and not take it to heart. «Peace I leave with you; let not your hearts be troubled» John 14:27

#3 Take your time living

We often think that grass is greener in the future and you will be happy sometime later. But the secret is that if you learn to cherish every day and be happy now your life will become more meaningful and fruitful. “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time” Eph. 5:15-16

#4 Listen to your parents

Sounds so trivial but it is so important! Your parents are wiser and more experienced, they only want the best for you. Obedience is better than sacrifice: it doesn't only strengthen the relationship but also protects us from many mistakes and wrong choices. If you have a question - ask someone older, find a mentor. “A wise man listens to advice.” Prov. 12:15

#5 Be yourself

If you're a teenager I would even say "find yourself". We depend a lot on public opinion (which is important for society) but following it we might lose who we are - that precious that God put into us. “He has made everything beautiful” Eccl. 3:1 - learn how to love and respect yourself.

Other advice was also mentioned a few times so I'll definitely share it as well!

Learn

We already established that it's important to evolve and develop when you have a chance. Someone recommended learning foreign languages and other specific subjects, someone just regretted that they didn't put enough effort into it when they had a chance. Education doesn't only give us knowledge but it also builds up our personality.

Value people, talk more

It's fun, it's healthy, it's intended by God. But you should be careful choosing friends: a church is not a guarantee of holiness. You should look for friends that bring you closer to God, not further from Him.

Seek God and flee sin

  • repent

  • go to church

  • study the Word

  • spend time with God and learn to understand Him

  • pornography is evil

Hardships are experience

Both victories and failures make us who we are. They also teach us how to trust God and be closer to Him.

What would you add to this list? Which point do you agree with the most?
